Ceramic Bookends

We so excited to share these pieces and the process behind them with all of you! There are so many ways that we find inspiration for new work, but for these, experimentation was key. My studio assistant Krista and I went back to a practice I used to use quite often in the studio back when it was just me:
structured play.

We gave ourselves limits on the style of making and tools we could use, put on some music and set to just messing about.  (I wanted to share this part with you because this kind of play and having time to just get weird is SUCH an important part of an artist's studio practice, but is sometimes difficult to access, for a multitude of reasons as we grow our businesses). So, within about an hour we each had a few very weird things and a couple with promise that we wanted to explore. Then we worked together to further a couple of ideas that looked interesting, and eventually, we had a new design for bookends.

Of course we've worked for weeks to perfect the process. We experimented with weight and the finishing details and glazing. What we've made is a set of bookends that are functional not only to support your books, but sculptural pieces that can even serve to display small items within their shape.
